About Cigar Lighting

Take a moment to go over our FAQ section on cigar lighting, which have been submitted by our readers.

When lighting my cigar with a match, can I use paper ones?

Use wooden matches. Not only is the match usually longer than the paper ones, but the paper has chemicals which can affect the taste of your cigar. When you do use a wooden match, wait a couple seconds after striking to allow the sulfur to burn off before lighting your cigar. If you do not, you will taste the sulfur on the cigar.

I have a Zippo lighter that uses lighter fluid. Is this okay to light my cigars with?

No. The lighter fluid will negatively affect the taste of your cigar, like barbecuing with charcoal and tasting the lighter fluid on your food. Butanes are best. They are odor free.

I'm looking to buy a butane lighter. Any suggestions?

There are many fine brands of butane lighters. You may want to consider a torch lighter. These work well even with windy conditions and offer an extremely hot concentrated flame.

Instead of shopping around and weeding through the different types of lighters available on the market, could you suggest a specific one you would recommend?

The Colibri lighter is an excellent choice. I have owned mine for over 2 years and have not had one problem. Make sure it is a butane torch. Do not buy one that requires lighter fluid.
