Another Cigar Tax in Sheep's Clothing
January 27, 2009 Well, here we go again, ladies and gents... Cigar Tax you say? If you care about the CHILDREN, you can plainly see we need this tax... or so Uncle Sam would like you to believe. In this age of sound bites and struggling economy, once again, our government is rolling out that dreaded "C" word. Now, I am very sensitive toward the less fortunate, hard-working US Citizens that have fallen on hard times. Whenever I'm in a position to help others, without putting a burden on my own family, I do. The notion that the government is here to provide services for every person in this country is ludicrous. Our Founding Fathers understood that the government should be here to protect our freedom and rights as US citizens, and not play nurse maid for those who have no desire to produce, but just take. Of course I want every child to have the opportunity to have at least basic Health Care, and as far as I know, there are already programs in place to assist them. In fact, one of the reasons our hospital expenses are so high, is that we are bearing at least part of the burden of the treatment of those individuals that come in for medical care, but do not have the means to pay for them. There is not one program our government runs that is efficient or cost effective. What makes us think this SCHIP Program will be any different? SCHIP, by the way, stands for State Children's Health Insurance Program. Whether you are for or against cigar smoking, to allow the government to once again come to the trough is ridiculous. There is no accountability with this program. They have even lowered the bar in regards to people having to prove they are eligible, or are who they say they are. Oh, and what happens when the cigar smoking and cigarette smoking population goes down even lower? You guessed it... Stay tuned to see what they go after next. Why stop at a cigar tax? Perhaps a new nationwide car usage tax? What about a carbon footprint tax for individual homes? I can see our politicians now... all with there bibs on and drooling over all the possibilities!
